Vnsh at Designart
Soichiro Tanaka presents Vnsh, a new series of lighting works.
We find purpose and meaning in phenomena and natural objects, and in doing so we divide up the world. Light gives us a sense of hope and security; we value its power to illuminate and reveal, and we use it in many ways. Yet while light makes some things visible, it makes others disappear. By day, the depths of a river reflecting the sun cannot be seen. The moment lightning strikes, everything around it is swallowed by a white darkness.
Vnsh invites viewers to look past these assumptions. LEDs are set into a 5 mm diameter pipe with slits, so each fixture lights its surroundings while itself disappearing into the light. Moving beyond what words tell us and letting the senses reinterpret what we see, the works create a space that is tranquil yet surprising.
